Hiring Vs. Buying – The Benefits Of Forklift Truck Hire
Posted on by mm-admin
Forklifts, employed for lifting and moving materials, are used by various industries. Not all companies opt to buy their own trucks, however, even when they are used on a regular basis, and there are some very good reasons for this.
No large upfront purchase costs
Forklifts can be hired on a short term or long term basis. If hiring on a long term basis there is typically the option to pay smaller amounts weekly or monthly whereas short term hire costs can vary. Both short and long term hire saves the customer from having to pay out a large amount upfront, money which may not be readily available.
No maintenance costs and issues
When a forklift truck is bought, the owner is responsible for all maintenance costs and issues. Over the course of the year, this can add significant amounts to the budget and, as the forklift ages, maintenance costs increase correspondingly. Regular hire payments are simpler to budget for than unexpected costs.
Added to this are the costs of keeping machines out of service and bringing in temporary replacements if necessary. When hiring, all this is dealt with by the hire company and there is no need to worry about servicing or replacing a truck. If there are problems with a hire truck and a replacement is required, then this is may well be provided free of charge by the hire company.
Safety and legal issues
Owners of forklift trucks must make sure the vehicles are properly maintained and meet all relevant safety requirements. Many accidents involving forklifts are down to bad maintenance and poor working conditions. Companies hiring forklifts are also responsible for the training and working conditions of forklift legislation.
Hiring a forklift has advantages in this regard. Hire companies can offer expert advice together with full risk assessments, lifting plans and method statements, covering aspects such as personal protective equipment, checklists, and operating instructions.
Choice of models
Hiring a forklift also enables an element of flexibility. The customer can choose which model to hire for a specific job, which may be a different model to that required for another task. The same level of flexibility cannot be obtained when buying a forklift, possibly leading to higher costs and/or inefficient working practices.
